Coast Guard Auxiliary member and Cape Cod resident Reid Oslin gave the OMC a fascinating presentation on one of the most remarkable rescues in U.S. Coast Guard history—the 1952 rescue of the SS Pendleton. On a treacherous February night, four Coast Guardsmen from Station Chatham launched a 36-foot lifeboat into hurricane-force winds and towering seas after the tanker broke in two off Monomoy Island. Their extraordinary efforts resulted in the rescue of 32 of the 33 men aboard.

Drawing on extensive research, Reid brought this dramatic Cape Cod story to life, including the courage and seamanship of the four Coast Guardsmen who became legends of the service. The Pendleton rescue later inspired the book and Disney film The Finest Hours.

Reid is a longtime Coast Guard Auxiliary member and communications watchstander, with extensive experience supporting Coast Guard operations and search-and-rescue missions.
