President John Caney called the meeting to order at 12:15
1) Welcome and opening remarks. John gave Peter Holcombe a plaque and a mysterious envelope celebrating his 2016 presidency.
2) Introduction of 3 guests.
3) The minutes from January were accepted.
4) Treasurer’s report –We have $28,475 total funds with all 2016 scholarships paid. Audit was completed successfully. We are in very good financial shape.
5) Induction of 1 new members – Rob King, bringing our membership to 192. We need to focus on getting guests and thus new members into the club. The club directory will be available next
meeting.
6) Luncheon Speakers: Today – Robert Nash on revitalizing the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. March 1 –Chris McCort, Director of the Whydah Pirate Museum. April 5 – Dr. Rainer Weiss of MIT on “probing the universe with Gravitational Waves.”
7) Scholarship: 3 $5000 scholarships have been posted at Barnstable H. S. and we should have applications for them by March.
The big event will be the recycling program at the transfer station in September. We need more people to sign up for shifts and start saving your returnables now. A board will be posted at the next meeting for shift signup including wives.
8) Fellowship – Chuck Wry indicated that two former members have passed this year were recognized by a moment of silence.
9) Golf – The 2017 schedule is being put together.
10) Bowling: Jerry Fortier indicated that we have 40 bowlers, but because of absence, the team is looking for subs for the winter.
11) Rennie Discussion: Will meet next Tuesday at 10AM. The direction is to make it a true discussion group. The subject is a divided America – Jacksonian traditions that affected our foreign and domestic policies. Material is available at the Osterville library.
12) Events: Paul Ruane said that a full schedule of events is planned for the year: spring cookout, sea voyage, and a Christmas party. A committee is being formed regarding our 60th anniversary
event which may include a club function and a “give back to the community event”.
13) Good Guy Award – Bill Keto is looking for nominations for this award. We generally give out two of these annually.
14) Investment Club: The 1/31 meeting had record attendance. The next meeting is 2/28 at 10AM.
15) Dave Reid introduced Bob Nash, Executive Director of the Cultural Center of Cape Cod who gave an illuminating on the power of a community in the rejuvenation of an old building.
