OMC Membership Meeting
April 4, 2018
- President Dave Reid called the membership meeting to order at 12:15 after which he told a joke.
- Dave then asked for guests to be introduced. Two gusts were introduced, Bill Shumway and Leon Fein.
- Paul Goyette indicated that the March meeting minutes had been sent via email to most members and via USPS to those members who do not have email.A motion was made to approve the minutes and seconded. The minutes were then approved unanimously.
- Treasurer’s Report: Frank Ward presented the treasurer’s report. Frank felt that progress was “normal” with respect to the club’s finances. The beginning balance for the period was $32,266 and the ending balance is $32,187. This balance consists of the scholarship account for $23,507 and the operating account for $8,680. The total cash receipts were $1,482 and the total cash disbursements were $1,561. $80 was received in dues and $180 for the scholarship account. 161 members have paid to date versus 173 last year.
- Membership: George French presented the membership data.Richard Depew was inducted at the March meeting. No members were reinstated, removed or resigned in March. Two new members, Ron Matros and Steven B. Ayres were introduced by George French brining the OMC membership to 196 members.
- Luncheon Speakers: Dave Reid filled in for Bob Callahan who was unable to make the meeting. Gwen Friss who is the dining editor is scheduled to speaker today. May’s schedule calls for a talk by Matt Sautner, Special Agent of the Secret Service to speak on his career in law enforcement.
Committee Reports
- Fellowship: Chuck Wry gave run down on the status o f a number of members. Dave Richardson is in the Bourne Nursing facility and is holding his own. John Bartnicki is in the Pavilion Nursing facility. Bill Belden is in a Plymouth facility. Don Lee had successful hip surgery. Steven Gustafson has triple bypass last May. Paul Thompson is recovering from surgery. Dick Colella has esophageal issues. Compliments to Doug Scott who is looking after Gene Holley.
- Jim Ruane presented the status of the committee and where they are in both last year’s and this year’s process. The scholarship process for 2017 is closed. All the transcripts were received and the scholarship money allocated to the students. The 2019 process is in full swing. Out of 50 applications 6 have been selected and will be interviewed in May. We will award 4 scholarships on June first at the high school. The reason we are able to award four scholarships is due to the income, over $4800, from the bottle collection last May. Since the meeting the OMC has been awarded the September 2019 slot. The 50/50 raffle of $165 was awarded to Steve Ayres.
- Gerry Fortier presented the current status of the bowling teams. The Eagles were in first place but the Sub Mariners, Bill Coale, Fred Mesinger, Pat McLaughlin, Ken Leonard and Norm Robinson are now in first place.
- Don Macdonald, whose term is up in September presented the status of the 2018 golf season. He sent out a total of 135 emails and he encouraged the players to bring guests so we can meet the minimum number of players required by the various golf courses. All the courses are locked in for both the spring and fall venues.
- Rennie Discussion Group. The Rennie Discussion Group meets on the Tuesday following the OMC meeting. The next Rennie discussion is on 8 May at the Osterville Library. The Topic is: “America’s Two foundational Documents”, The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Do they still resonate? Should we alter the Constitution to make it more relevant to the 21stcentury demands and challenges?
- Miracle Workers. The Miracle Workers meet on the first Monday of the month at the Salvation Army building in Hyannis. The program needs volunteers. If you are interested you can contact Ken Molloy.
- Meals On Wheels: Wes Harrington spoke about the clubs involvement in the Meals On Wheels (MOW). He noted that we have been very successful in supporting MOW and have not missed one commitment despite some very poor weather conditions on some occasions. We have been asked to see if we can support add a second day. It involves 1 day every fifth or sixth week. We currently have 11 volunteers and in order to support a second delivery day we need to have 4 or 5 more volunteers whom we can train. In many cases we are the only contact the recipients have. Our delivery also serves as a wellness check and a brief companion visit.
- Events: An idea to hold a summer luncheon at the Wianno Club with a price of $40 to $45 mentioned.
- The Poker Group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7PM in one of the player’s homes. The games last until about 10:30. The poker game played is predominantly seven card stud with a quarter limit or 50 cents when a pair is showing or on the seventh card. There is a limit of three raises.
- Investment Club. Dave Reid spoke about the Investment Club. The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of month at the Osterville Library. A guest speaker is invited to discuss the current market conditions.
- Intermission for Lunch.
- Luncheon Speaker: Dave Reid introduced Gwen Friss, the Dinning Editor of The Cape Cod Times. Gwen spoke about how she goes about picking a restaurant to survey and how she analyzes both the food quality and service.
- The meeting was adjourned about 2:00 PM.
OMC Membership Meeting March 7, 2018
- President Dave Reid called the membership meeting to order at 12:15 after which he told an Irish joke.
- Dave then asked for guests to be introduced. One guest, Jim Depue was introduced.
- Paul Goyette spoke to the February minutes. The minutes from the February meetinghad been posted to the website and sent via hard copy to five members who do not have electronic access. A motion was made to approve the minutes and seconded. The minutes were then approved unanimously.
- Treasurer’s Report : Frank Ward presented the treasurer’s report. Frank felt that progress was “normal” with respect to the club’s finances. The beginning balance for the period was $37,674 and the ending balance is $32,266. This balance consists of the scholarship account for $23,327 and the operating account for $8,939. The total cash receipts were $2,658 and the total cash disbursements were $8,066.
- Membership: George French presented the membership data. We added one member last month Jim Pisciotta. One member will introduce himself today, Dick Depue. The total of all members is 194.
- New Member Introduction: Don Megathlin introduced Dick Depue as a new member who then provided the membership with a brief speech of his background.
- Luncheon Speakers: Bob Callahan discussed the current and future speaker schedule. Today, 7 March, Bob Elmer, president of Care for Caregivers, to speak on the care for those suffering from Alzheimer ’s disease. April’s speaker is Gwenn Friss, an editor and food critic at the Cape Cod Times. She will speak about how she chooses and the criteria she uses. May’s schedule calls for a talk by Matt Sautner, Special Agent of the Secret Service to speak on his career in law enforcement.
- Good Guy Award: Bill Keto and Bill Cutcliffe are co-chairs of the Good Guy’s Award CommitteeCommittee Reports
- Fellowship: Bob Donahue spoke briefly about the fellowship function. He reminded the members that the OMC has volunteers who will house sit while family members are attending a funeral.

11. Scholarship: Jim Ruane spoke briefly about the status of the scholarship fund. As of
February all three five thousand dollar scholarships have been awarded. Last award
going to Caroline Neville.
12. Bowling: Jerry Fortier noted that the first place team whose captain is Dick Colella is the
Eagles. The bowling group could always use substitutes.
13. Golf: Paul Goyette indicated that six venues are locked up for the spring and include
some exclusive private courses. High handicaps are OK. May 1 is the kick off. 14. Events: John Caney spoke about how popular the Day of Caring was, so it will be
repeated this year. Also the cruise event may be reinstated including some changes the attendees from the last cruise indicated would improve the cruise experience. Namely, less wine and more food. The picnic is scheduled for July 18th.
15. Rennie Discussion Group Bob Callahan noted, we will discuss government institutions and how they function, especially when the current administration has criticized many of them. (FBI, State Dept., EPA) for bias, incompetence, and bloat.
16. Meals On Wheels: Wes Harrington spoke about the large success of the program. Our club members have not missed a single appointment. We have been asked to see if we can support a second delivery day. We currently have a total of 11 drivers but in order to institute a second day of weekly service to Meals On Wheels we would like to reach a total of 18 drivers. That means we would need to attract and train 7 additional drivers.
17. Miracle Workers: The Miracle Workers continues to provide lunch for the homeless at the Salvation Army the first Monday of the month. As always volunteers are welcome.

OMC LUNCHEON MEETING November 1, 2017
President John Caney called the military meeting to order at 12:15.
1) Songs were sung recognizing all branches of the service with members standing.
2) One guest was introduced.
3) The minutes from October were accepted.
4) Treasurer’s report – we have $39,622 total funds. We are in very good financial shape.
5) Two new members were inducted – Dan Prior and Jim Dunbar. We welcome them to OMC. The membership stands at 194.
6) Luncheon Speakers: Today – Our military meeting will feature Colonel Walter Watson, USMC retired and Captain Ed Lambert, USN retired, Captain Dave Sandell (OMC) to introduce Commodore Brad Lima, MMA. December and January there are no speakers. February will have a talk by Brian Howes, Water quality expert on Cape Cod. March is Bob Elmer on Alzheimer care. May’s schedule calls for a talk by Matt Sautner, Special Agent of the secret service.
7) Fellowship – Chuck Wry gave the fellowship report. His group will house sit should a member/family pass on.
8) Scholarship: Jim Ruane announced that we will be awarding four $5000 scholarships in 2018 due to the funds raised by the dump program. Well done members!!! Take a bow!! We still need scholarship
donations that go with your membership dues. Loosen those money belts!!
9) Rennie Discussion Group – The November meeting is next Tuesday and will be about “Racism” with John Caney to moderate. The January meeting will involve the American Dream – is it real?.
10) Events: The OMC “Day of Caring” was a huge success!! The Christmas party will be held at the Cummaquid Club on December 6th at 5:30 with a buffet and seating for all attendees.
11) Golf – Don MacDonald said the golf season is over. The President’s cup goes to Gerry Fortier. Low gross to Dave Dinel. The spring season locations are almost complete.
12) Miracle workers – See Ken Mulloy or Charlie Dings if you wish to volunteer to serve the homeless for lunch the first Monday of every Month.
13) Investment Club – Dave Reid invites anybody to join the meetings. The next one is Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
14) Poker – Stan Goldstein invites members to contact him to play at member’s houses the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7PM.
15) Peter Holcombe presented the list of 2018 proposed Officers and Executive Committee members. Please see website for the list.
