The Osterville Men's Club annually awards $13,000 in scholarship aid to graduating seniors at Barnstable High School who are planning on further higher education. All recipients over the past five years have become college honor students and are attending public and private institutions in 23 states. With college costs now exceeding 50,000/year in many instances, our scholarship program takes on a special significance for these talented young men and women. Those selected usually rank in the top five to ten percent in the class, possess above average College Board scores and have strong backgrounds in school and community activities. They also must demonstrate financial need and create favorable interview impressions. All of last year's winners have received their scholarship checks after submitting transcripts of their first semester grades. They again are all honor students and are keeping up a tradition for excellent performance.
This spring the Class of 2009 submitted 88 applications for our 6 awards for a record-breaking almost 15-1 ratio. The Committee has now completed its intensive review process, interviewed the ten finalists and selected the following six recipients:
SARAH A. PATELLOS $3000 Grunewald Award
A Marstons Mills resident, Sarah is in the top five percent of the class, has outstanding College Board scores and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and President of the Student Council. She also writes for the student newspaper, is Captain of the Dance team and finds time to work as a server at a local restaurant and as a fashion show model for Sri Boutique. She desires a career in the communications field and will attend the University of Southern California in the fall.
ARIELLE HANSEN $2000 Award
A resident of Marstons Mills Arielle is in the top six percent of her class, achieved excellent scores on her College Board tests and is President of the Senior Class. She is a member of the national Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Chamber Chorus, the Vocal Zazz Ensemble and is a member of the swimjming team. Her mother passed away while she was in high school and despite this traumatic experience she never faltered in her school performance. She will be attending Northeastern University in the fall.
ALISON KLOTZ $2000 Award
A resident of Centerville, Alison is in the top eight percent of her class with strong College Board scores. A member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society she is also a member of the Student Council and the championship Volley Ball team. She works part-time and is the youngest of eight children all of who have gone to college. She plans to major in business and will attend Wagner College in the fall.
AREF NASSERY $2000 Award
A resident of Centerville Aref is in the top three percent of the class and his College Board scores place him in the top 2 percent nationally. A National Merit Commendation winner and a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Gold Medal National Latin Exam and is a student representative on the School Committee. He is fluent in three languages and aspires to be a college professor. He will attend Williams College in the fall.
PATRICK MUND $2000 Award
A resident of Barnstable, Patrick is in the top five percent of the class, has outstanding College Board scores and has been active as an officer and member of several school organizations, He is fluent in German as well as English and has an older brother in college. He works after school at CVS as a photo technician and would like a career as a sports manager. He will attend Amherst College in the fall.
JASON L. PACELLA $2000 Award
A resident of West Barnstable he ranks in the top six percent of the class and has above average College Board scores. He is treasurer of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Drama Club. While in school he has been on the honor roll every term for four years. He is very interested in Theatre and plans to attend Emerson College in the fall.
