Greetings,
We had 23 hard souls play Wianno this
morning. Though we dodged the rain, the wind picked up and made it feel like we
were playing on "the olde sod".
In any case, we all survived and are better
people for it. The same can not be said of the "no shows"!!
Next week we have an unusual starting time.
We have a
I suggest we try to show up for lunch prior
to tee time. In any case, everyone should be ready to sign in no later than

We are getting
ready for the
Jack was able to get a shotgun start on all the courses this
spring, which speeds up play. That will
reduce the wait time to tee off and allow us to finish about the same time.
This will allow us to have lunch together. We want to encourage everyone to
stay for lunch as the courses have accommodated our request for the shotgun
start in anticipation of us dining at their restaurant, where available.
We will be using the ABCD format again
this year. We encourage all to play as many of the courses as they can, as we are
trying to get an increased turnout this year. With the shotgun starts, it will
speed up everyone’s starting time. Feel
free to invite guests to join us, but please be sure to let us know in advance
they will attend. There is an
The Club Championship (low gross) and
The President’s Cup (low net) again will be featured. Each will be played on a
spring and fall course, with the winner having the lowest score on both
courses. Thus, you have to play both spring and fall to qualify.
We are trying something new this
Spring. We have a noon shotgun start at Ocean Edge. It allows more time to
arrive, plus it should be warmer later in the day. The course has been rebuilt
and is suppose to be very nice. We encourage everyone to show up early and have
an early lunch prior to tee off.
If during the course of the season,
you need to change your attendance, either to add a course or drop one, please
call a committee member and let us know. It is imperative that we show up with
a number of players as close as possible to the projected number. To change
course schedules, please call:

Submitted by Eric Giessler, Golf Chairman
November 2007
The
2007
The
spring courses were Captains in Brewster, Brookside in Bourne, BayBerry Hills
in West Yarmouth, Wianno in Osterville, Dennis Pines in Dennis, Highland Links
in Truro, and Crosswinds in Plymouth. Though Highland Links was rained out, we
were able to reschedule. This is a very popular venue due to the links nature
of the course and the spectacular views.
The
fall courses were Quashnet Valley in Mashpee, Atlantic in Plymouth, BallyMeade
in Falmouth, Kings Way in Yarmouthport, The Ridge Club in Sandwich, Wianno in
Osterville, and Hyannis Golf Course in Hyannis. We were rained out at Kings
Way, but were unable to reschedule.
Thus,
we ended up playing 13 different courses in ten different towns. There are not
many courses in the area that we haven’t played over the last few years. We
have been able to maintain the diversity of public and private courses in
different towns in the area. BallyMeade was the only new addition to the tour
this year.
We
again organized players in foursomes using an ABCD system based on individual
handicaps. We switched to this method a couple of years ago. Before that time,
players were required to set up their own foursomes. This made it difficult for
new players to integrate into the group. It also created imbalance among the
foursomes with the same groups winning quite frequently. We now have a system
that is more balanced and easily welcomes new players to the tour.
We
also continued using a shotgun start which was initiated last year. Rather than
everyone starting serially on the first tee, every foursome tees off on a
different hole simultaneously. Previously, the last group wouldn’t start until
more than an hour after the first. By using the shotgun start, everyone
finished at about the same time. This cuts down on the amount of time from
arrival at the course to completion of all players’ rounds. The side benefit is
that we are able to have lunch together
after the round at the golf course or at a
local restaurant. This has substantially added to the camaraderie of the
players.
Thus,
with the combination of the shotgun starts and the assignment of foursomes
using the ABCD system, the social aspects of the Golf Tour has been
substantially enhanced.
The
annual President’s Cup (net score tournament) and Club Championship (gross
score) were held at one course in the spring and one in the fall each. The
winner of the President Cup is Gerry Fortier and Wendell Gates was first runner
up. The winner of the Club Championship is Jack Hynes and Frank Weibel was
first runner up. The trophies were presented to the winners at the awards
luncheon on October 29th at Hyannis Golf Course.
Putting
together the spring and fall events requires a full team effort. The Golf
Committee members all chipped in to ensure successful events. Again this year,
Jack Hynes did a great job setting up the courses.
On
a sad note, we experienced the passing of Bob Ball this fall. Bob has been an
instrumental member of the Golf Committee and he will be sorely missed.
In
summary, though attendance was down this year, we had a successful golf season.
And, we look forward to continuing the tradition in 2008!

What a spectacular day! What
a nice golf course! What a nice, quick round of golf! Ok,
2 out of 3 isn't bad!!
We got a great break on the weather. And, again the
blind draw put two teams into the top 3 scores. People are going to lobby to be
in a threesome if this keeps up!
This was the last
spring event. We had a total of 231 players this spring, for an average of 33
per venue. We had 269 players sign up, which would have been an average
attendance of 38.
The fall schedule is
set and I will be communicating it by email in the next week or two. Jack has
again set up a great lineup of courses.
I'd like to wish
everyone a safe and healthy summer. I look forward to seeing you all on the
fall tour.
Eric
