I just returned from our annual Bowling
Banquet and I find that much of what I wrote last year is running through my
mind about this years Banquet. It was
held at the same place, the Cummaquid Country Club, and as it seems to be
coming a tradition, it was every bit as enjoyable as all the others: The warm hospitality, the view of the golf
course, and above all, the delicious appetizers and dinner were as good as it
gets. Much of the credit for this goes
to Gerry Fortier and his son Michael who is a member of this fine Country
Club.
Also special recognition and kudos go to
two others on the Bowling Committee; Dick Colella for the tireless attention to
record keeping and Ernie McGinnes for keeping the
books (just one set) for which he was given the Fred Hulme
award. If they make it look easy it is
only because they do it as a labor of love.
Our many thanks to you all.
The raffle was held for the many prizes
that were donated by members and others and except for seeing Fred Mesinger at
the prize table so often --- he hardly had time to sit down before his winning
number was called out again --- it was entertaining and profitable (but very
suspicious!)
The "Yellow Pin" money pool was
in the green. We try to raise only
enough money to keep solvent and that we have always done.
And speaking of the Yellow Pin one was
given to none other than Carl Meade. For what? No one
seems to know. I'm sure it will occupy a
prominent place on his mantle forevermore.
Next season will start on the first Thursday
after Labor Day, Sept. 4. Watch for the
August mailing. It will have a card
asking us all to sign up for another great bowling season. And that is especially for those of you who
have not bowled with us before and even if you have NEVER bowled at all. We have a full handicap policy and that is a
great equalizer. For example; someone
with an average of 120 will get 60 pins per game; some with an average of 160
will get 20 pins per game. So you will
not be holding down the team no matter how good or poorly you bowl.
Remember, bowling is not really the
objective; It
is the medium that brings us together, that we may share each others good
company in a way that is not otherwise possible. Just ask those of us who bowl.

See you all next season,
Last night we closed out
our bowling season with a traditional bowling banquet held at the Cummaquid
Golf Club and, as usual, it was a congenial finishing touch to a season filled
with keen competition, team spirit and, above all, the warm companionship that
is typical of the Osterville Mens Club.
Gerry Fortier ably served
as our MC just as he had carried on for our league Bowling Chair, Fred Hulme, after he had become too ill to serve and who later
passed away. After a moment of silence
for Fred and Ken Lima, both of whom were avid bowlers, we sat to a tasty buffet
that bordered on elegance. Cummaquid has
hosted the last three banquets and is an excellent venue not just for the
scenic views of the course but for the red carpet treatment they extend to us
thanks to Gerry and his son Michael, a Club member.
Generous cash prizes were
given to everyone as team members and to individuals for high scoring. Harold MacNeely recieved the prize for bowling an astounding single game of
276 the highest single string in OMC history.
He threw 11 strikes, one short of the 12 strikes required for a perfect
300 game! Bravo!
Joe Marzilli won high
average. Forest Casterline
won for high three games. And a special
prize we call the Fred Hulme Award was given to Val
Larson for his spirit and dedication to the OMC Bowling Club.
Another special prize was
awarded to Hal MacNeely that excited him so much that
he paraded it around to all who were willing to look at it. It was a beautifully framed color photograph
of Gerry's bust. We know that it will
take a prominent place on Mac's mantel and that he will cherish it for many
years to come.
A raffle of many and
various prizes raised $160 net, money that will be used to cover our Bowling
Club's operating costs next season.
Before listing the final
team standings I offer to both those of you who bowl and those who don't a
personal observation:
Of the many side
activities that are a part of the OMC I have not found any that equal the
Bowling Club for close companionship of 40 members, under one roof, for a 32
week season. It is especially effective
as an ice breaker for new members. It
was for me 7 years ago.
So, if you don't bowl
very well or even if you have never bowled at all don't be shy. If you will not be available for part of the
season you may want to start as a sub.
Sign up for the fall season opening on September 6. Remember that it is a full handicap
league. For example; A bowler who holds an average of 100 will get
an 80 pin handicap while a bowler who has an average of 140 will get 40 pins. It is the great equalizer even when you can't
be there (we use your average + handicap).
Also, free lessons are available for beginners. See you in September.
